For newer players, whichever the staples for your daily grind. Well water element is not as dominant as before, they still hold most useful childs for multi purpose.
For seasoned players, 1 way to look at it is to see the number of natural 5* childs that they have at +6. Choose the elements with the least plus 6 to avoid duplicates.
Water - 5 +6 uncapped childs
Fire - 2 +6 uncapped childs
Choose the fire one. Count for all elements.

Let's break this down into a few parts:
1) Level of units and skills
Understand that you are limited by resources but that probably plays a big part.
Attackers at level 60 vs 50 makes quite an impact.
Skill levels too, bit by bit makes a huge difference.
2) Natural 5*
The natural 5*s vs natural 4* makes quite abit of difference. The scalability is just at a different level.
3) Fire team with Kid sidhoe
I think this will also impact alot.
I dont have as many light attackers, but the double edge fire team really impact quites abit.
My top dealer is uncap6 baset, but 2nd and third position goes to harmony deb and hestia.
4) Debufs vs buffs
Debuffers really suffer due to world boss high resistance. I think this is one of the main reason. Also, minus defence vs %minus defence as world boss levels.
