The general rule of thumb is that natural 4*+6 = natural 5*+3 all else being equal. I would recommend pulling on the current banner to try and get another copy of Frej, that would push him to be distinctly better.
Realistically, use the one you can afford to use Onyx on.
Keyword "should." Here's hoping they have learned from previous implementations that, we as a community, would like a little bit more of a heads up before releasing events. This effectively allows us to prepare the appropriate childs and keeps people from being complacent/bored.
TLDR; Teasers earlier-> More hype-> ???-> Profit
They are pretty close. The differences:
Dana:
Better base damage (not relevant)
Better Slide: Larger barrier
Better Drive: Larger drive defense
Mars:
Better survivability: base tap has vampire for self
Slide: Smaller barrier, but with HP Regen
TLDR; Dana will be overall better, but Mars is still definitely high tier.

Each Child will have its own type of element. There are 5 different types of elements in the game, each with its own elemental resistance (20% less damage) and weaknesses (25% more damage):
Fire (Red) element is strong against wood (Green) element
Wood element is strong against water (Blue) element
Water element is strong against fire element
Light (Yellow) and Dark (Purple) elements are strong against each other
(Pulled from a Beginner's Guide posted last year)
From this data, to answer your question, Hestia is probably your best bet, elemental resistance on damage received, and extra damage to wood childs.
The only sustainable way to get crystals is via the exploration missions that @MagicFeline mentioned. Sending out 2* childs each day will net you consistent crystals.
Devil rumble can be another way to get crystals depending on how much time you can commit to learning the strategies and getting higher ranks.
Additionally, finishing the story mode missions through hard mode can net you some one-time crystal rewards as well.
TLDR; Exploration is your friend.
The 5th stage is definitely faster, but not as efficient as other story stages (like 7-8-1) in terms of xp/stamina especially with Hot Time starting today.
Personally, I will be running the 1st stage to finish the fiesta missions and then ignore it for the rest of the event.
From the language, this appears to be a copy and paste template email; probably as a result of being inundated with emails concerning this recent event.
That being said, this does not devalue your input and only increases Line's awareness of the playerbase's concerns. Thank you for posting.
I agree, the implementation is terrible. The only way for DC to learn is by not spending IRL money while the banner is available. With them being a corporation, profits drive decision making. Ignoring the banner(s) will hopefully force them to make better banners in the future.
Unpopular Opinion: Ignore the Banner(s) 13That is true. Though on the other hand, being able to directly purchase Onyx would appear too much like a cash grab and deter some players. Also, it would drive the balance of the game more towards whales. (That last part I don't really mind as they are paying so that I can enjoy the game for free)
The Lack of ONYX 21From a developer's perspective, there needs to be a bottleneck, especially for a free to play game. In the vast majority of freemium games, the bottleneck is the premium currency (crystals in DC's case). This, however, is almost a non-issue here; there are so many ways to get a sustainable amount of crystals (most popularly, exploration)
This means that DC needs a different bottleneck to make money. And don't get me wrong, there are plenty of people that will also throw money at getting more banner pulls. But, for those that are playing more than casually, Onyx is the primary limiting factor. It forces hurdles on awakenings and upgrading skills. Players get frustrated, and they spend money on purchases that they were on the fence about.
It is all too easy to imagine a player being on the fence about purchasing Devil Pass for the skin and then seeing that it also comes with some Onyx. Makes total business sense to me.
TLDR; DC needs to make money.
